A Christmas can't go by without making these! These cookies are a lot of work. I remember (it seemed) that on the day they were to be made, everyone was at Grandma's to help out. Tricky part is getting the dough very thin. Rolling out the dough between two sheets of wax paper can help do the trick.
1 ¾ cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup butter
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg white
4 tablespoons water
sprinkles
1. Preheat oven to 325°.
2. Blend flour, baking powder & salt. In a separate bowl, beat butter, sugar, egg & vanilla. Add dry ingredients to butter/sugar combination a little bit at a time. Refrigerate for at least an hour.
3. Using floured bowl and rolling pin, roll dough very thin. Cut out shapes using small cookie cutters.
4. Combine egg white and water in a small bowl. Brush mixture onto each cookie before decorating with sprinkles.
5. Bake for 6-8 minutes until edges are slightly brown. Cookies should be very thin and crisp, like a cracker.
